IYP Rising Star Competition
The 2nd Annual Rising Star Competition is a piano concerto competition co-sponsored by Basically Beethoven Festival, Fine Arts Chamber Players (Dr. Alex McDonald, Festival Director and IYP Faculty Member) and SMU Institute for Young Pianists.
About the Basically Beethoven Festival and Fine Arts Chamber Players
Details:
Up to 5 (five) Winners will be selected from the audition recordings due June 15 to perform in a public concert with a professional string quintet Friday, July 16, 7:30pm. Venue: Caruth Auditorium, SMU campus, Dallas
1 (one) Grand Prize Winner from the same group of winners will be selected from the audition recordings to perform a movement of a Mozart concerto with a professional string quintet in a special online concert for a large audience during the Basically Beethoven Festival 2021. Venue: In 2021, this will be a pre-recorded concert as the festival will not be held in-person due to COVID-19.
Required repertoire:
18-20 minutes of repertoire which must include at least one movement of one of the concerti below. Automatic disqualification if over 20 minutes. If the concerto movement(s) fill(s) the time requirement, no additional repertoire is needed. However, an additional solo should be programmed if the concerto submission is under the 18-minute time requirement. See list of approved concerti below. Solo repertoire choices are at the discretion of teacher and student.

Prescreening video recording due June 15. YouTube or DropBox acceptable. Email links to lysinger@smu.edu
Up to 5 Winners will be selected at the judge’s discretion from prescreening recordings to perform live for an audience Friday, July 10 7:30pm at SMU. Judges will not provided names of students or their teachers.
1 Grand Prize Winner will be selected from the 5 winners to perform for the 2021 Basically Beethoven Festival as a featured Rising Star.

Open to rising 7th– 12th who are participants in 2021 SMU Institute for Young Pianists.
